What Should I Expect?

During your first appointment, which usually lasts around 30 minutes, your board-certified fellowship trained comprehensive pain medicine physician will work with you to fully understand your pain condition. We will work to diagnosis (find) the problem leading to your pain which can be coming from your muscles, nerves, spine or internal organs (i.e. abdomen).

Your initial appointment will include a physical examination. Your doctor may request diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) scan, to better understand your condition. If such tests are required, your doctor may provide specific instructions on how to prepare for your appointment.

Next, your physician will work with you to develop a personalized, detailed and complete pain management plan. This may include medication, physical or occupational therapy, interventions (procedures or small surgeries) or a combination of approaches. There are circumstances that we may refer you to other specialists within our office for an evaluation for other services if needed.

As an example, if you suffer from pelvic pain, we work with our gynecology specialists to understand the sources of your pain. This allows us to have complete patient centric approach.

We work with your primary care provider to help your pain treatment plan. In particular our pain medicine specialists are experienced in treating various pain conditions of spine that are associated with significant back pain.

Our services extend to the treatment of cancer pain as many of our pain physicians specializes in advanced clinical interventions such as kyphoplasty and intrathecal drug delivery systems (delivery of pain medications in the spine) to treat constant cancer pain.

Following your initial appointment, follow-up appointments last up to 20 minutes. During these visits, you and our physician, or an experienced nurse practitioner will discuss your pain level, functional abilities, response to treatments and formulate further plans. Our nurse practitioners have over 30 years of cumulative pain experience. To further facilitate your needs at the follow-up appointments, be sure to review any changes in your pain level or any concerns with medications.

Our pain medicine physicians are very active in clinical research; there are opportunities for you to participate in several research studies if you so desire. Some minor compensation may be available; please ask our physicians about our studies on peripheral diabetic neuropathy treatments and interventional treatments to treat back pain.
