Comprehensive, personalized screening plans help empower our patients to actively manage their own cancer risk. Our experts design individualized screening plans based on risk level and the type of cancer being targeted.

For women with an average gynecologic cancer risk level, we:

  • Obtain a very detailed family history
  • Provide a written report of the risk assessment for the patient and her primary care physician
  • Recommend screening tests like colonoscopy and mammograms based on national guidelines
  • Perform a gynecologic exam and evaluation

For women with a high gynecologic cancer risk, we:

  • Consider genetic DNA testing and interpretation
  • Provide a written report of the risk assessment for the patient and her primary care physician
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of various screening strategies in detail
  • Discuss personal preferences and short- and long-term goals
  • Develop and implement a customized cancer screening plan, which is both based on the results of her personal risk assessment and informed by national guidelines
  • Conduct ongoing screening during regular visits
  • If indicated, perform surgery

When necessary, our team coordinates multidisciplinary care with other cancer prevention experts at the University of Chicago Medicine. For example, high-risk breast cancer screening could also include annual breast MRI, in addition to mammograms and consultation with a breast cancer specialist.

Gynecologic Cancer Prevention

We specialize in the use of evidence-based gynecologic cancer prevention strategies including medication, lifestyle changes and minimally invasive risk-reducing surgeries when necessary.

Our Gynecologic Cancer Prevention Clinic creates an individualized prevention plan for every patient. At any risk level, we offer guidance to help women optimize lifestyle choices that protect against cancer, such as smoking cessation, exercise and nutrition. When appropriate, we may also use medication and surgery to lower risk.

For women with the highest risk of gynecologic cancer, surgery — such as removal of the ovaries or hysterectomy — may be an option. Our team helps each patient consider all of her options and choose the approach that she believes is best for her. For women who choose surgery, our specialists offer expertise in minimally invasive techniques.
