Personalized Liver Transplant Care for Every Patient

Our liver transplant team is dedicated to providing patients with individualized care. Our unique approach means every team member works together to evaluate patients, develop a treatment plan and provide ongoing treatment. This seamless coordination allows transplant patients to see several specialists in one visit so they don't have to make frequent trips to the hospital.

Treating All Types of Liver Conditions

Our liver specialists have extensive expertise caring for patients with early to advanced liver disease. When a patient reaches end-stage liver disease or liver failure, our team can evaluate him or her for liver transplantation. Conditions that lead to liver transplantation include:

  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Acute liver failure
  • Liver cancer
  • Biliary diseases
  • Genetic liver diseases

Several conditions and diseases lead to cirrhosis, such as alcoholic liver disease, chronic viral hepatitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).

Excellent Post-Transplant Survival Rates

Our liver transplant program delivers some of the highest outcomes in Illinois. Led by John Fung, MD, PHD and Michael Charlton, MBBS, FRCP, our world-renowned transplant surgeons offer hope for many patients who may have been turned down by other transplant programs. We care for patients with the most complex cases, which includes multiple and split liver transplants. UChicago Medicine transplant specialists are tied in first for performing the most combined heart-liver-kidney transplants in the nation.

Advanced Imaging Technology

We provide access to state-of-the-art imaging techniques for diagnosing and treating liver diseases, including MR elastography (MRE), high-intensity focused ultrasound guided by magnetic resonance (MR-HIFU), and sophisticated radiation therapy imaging and delivery techniques.

Liver Transplant Living Donation

Our program was the first in the nation to perform a living donor liver transplant, and we continue to be a leader in living donation for both children and adults. While we offer living and deceased transplant options, a living donor liver transplant has several benefits for recipients, including a shorter wait time, fewer complications and the convenience of being able to schedule your surgery date.
