Adrian Diaz, MD, MPH, is a board-certified surgical oncologist who diagnoses and treats a wide range of abdominal cancers, with a focus on:
- Liver cancer, including cancers that have spread to the liver
- Bile duct cancer
- Pancreas cancer
- Stomach cancer
- Small bowel cancer
- Appendix cancer
- Neuroendocrine cancer
- Sarcoma
With advanced training in complex surgical oncology, Dr. Diaz performs a range of cancer surgeries, including the Whipple procedure, distal pancreatectomy, gastrectomy and liver resection. He uses both traditional open surgery and minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery, when appropriate. These less invasive approaches allow him to remove tumors through smaller incisions, which may result in less pain, reduced scarring and a faster recovery, helping patients return to their everyday activities sooner.
Dr. Diaz works closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists and radiologists to develop a treatment plan based on each patient's diagnosis and individual goals. He takes time to explain the available options, what surgery involves and what to expect during recovery, helping patients and their families feel informed and confident in their decisions. Fluent in Spanish, Dr. Diaz can also communicate directly with Spanish-speaking patients and families in their preferred language.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Diaz conducts research focused on improving access to high-quality cancer surgery. He studies how insurance coverage, health policies and hospital systems affect patients' ability to receive treatment and their outcomes. His goal is to identify ways to make cancer surgery safer and more accessible for patients. Dr. Diaz has published his research in leading medical journals, including Health Affairs, JAMA Oncology and Annals of Surgery. He also presents his findings nationally and advises policymakers at the local and federal levels.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
