[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Dr. Peev. I'm a heart surgeon at the University of Chicago. I take care of patients with heart disease. My particular specialty is complex aortic pathology and minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery. I think, in a way, physician, or becoming a physician is a calling. I grew up in a family of physicians. I still have the lectures from lectures in surgery. I grew up in a household full with stories about operations, patients, pathology. And all those inspiring stories, in a way, shaped my desire and wish to become a physician and give back to people. University of Chicago is for sure a very special place for me in particular. As a matter of fact, this is the place where I trained. I developed a very unique relationship with the team as well as the patients. I would like to give back to the community. When I was a little boy growing up in a poor socialist country, there was a mission from Switzerland who came. And my mother was a physician and helped with translations. And subsequently, they brought us to Switzerland, which completely changed our life. And the only way I see to repay the gift that was given to us back to the community within the range of the city in Chicago as well as beyond that. There are many unique experiences in my profession. Every day is, in a way, a unique experience. Every encounter with a new patient is a unique experience. But something that certainly is on my heart is the fact that I go at least twice a year to Africa, to an elite and international team, in order to help people there perform heart operations and help local teams to build their own programs. I think that is a way to give back beyond the scope of our city, state, and country, but giving to other people who are in need and don't have the opportunity to get the help we get here. UChicago Medicine is committed to fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity in all matters related to compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare. This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
