Why did I become a midwife? I will give them a brief-- It's a long conversation. The abbreviated response is really that, for me, it combines a comfort with our physical bodies and working with individuals related to their physical health and a true passion and love for the mind and the spirit.
UChicago is already exceptional at high risk pregnancy care. And they have a vision to be also a haven for physiologic and low risk pregnancy, labor, and birth care. They believe the evidence that midwives are truly special and exceptional at supporting those systems. And while other practices in Chicago are having trouble struggling, closing, UChicago has really invested in growing midwifery here and having it be successful for the community.
In particular with prenatal care, one of the things that I really love to do is something called centering pregnancy, which is grouped prenatal care, really fostering a sense of community for pregnant individuals and their support people. I really enjoy working with adolescents, middle aged individuals, those in perimenopause, post menopausal care. I enjoy being an access point for mental healthcare.
Sexual health is really a very strong interest for me, and sexual wellness. And I think it's important to consider, based on our culture now, being trauma informed, so that all of my visits, no matter if there's a disclosed or not disclosed history of trauma, that I really work hard to make sure it's a safe environment and that someone feels secure and has an opportunity to experience what they want to experience.
My philosophy of care is really grounded in an early internship in my career where my mentor said to me that if you have an opportunity to interact with an individual, your goal always should be to seek empowerment, even if it's a small moment to reinforce their strengths. And I've carried that throughout my career.

Our list of accepted insurance providers is subject to change at any time. Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
