A specialized pelvic floor physical therapist will isolate the pelvic floor muscles to provide pelvic floor rehabilitation.  In a woman, the pelvic floor muscles are typically accessed through the vagina.
The goal of pelvic floor physical therapy is to rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles to reduce symptoms. Pelvic floor physical therapy works by retraining the muscles in your pelvis to function as they normally would.

At the University of Chicago Medicine, our licensed pelvic floor physical therapists will evaluate your pelvic floor muscles, tailor a treatment plan, and teach you pelvic floor exercises that can be done from the comfort of your home. It is important to practice these exercise exactly as they were taught so you do not exacerbate your symptoms. Our therapists also provide advanced services such as biofeedback, electrical stimulation and manual therapy to improve bladder and bowel symptoms.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is very effective at treating painful intercourse and the pelvic floor symptoms that are commonly experienced after childbirth.
