The UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center is made up of more than 200 renowned physicians and scientists, including medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, hematologists, pathologists and radiologists. These specialists work to understand your diagnosis then assemble a multidisciplinary care team that also includes highly skilled nurses, therapists, dieticians and pharmacists to provide coordinated, holistic care.

We're one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Illinois – the gold standard for cancer programs that is earned by the nation's top cancer centers. UChicago Medicine physician-scientists are committed to researching new and better approaches to treating cancer. As a leading academic medical center, our integrated research and clinical care approach provides advanced technologies, resources and therapies community hospitals may not have. As a result, our patients have access to more than 300 clinical trials of promising treatments that are not widely available.

Our cancer surgeons frequently use minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques that are highly effective at removing cancers while reducing recovery time and minimizing scarring, as compared with open surgical procedures. As a high-volume cancer center, UChicago Medicine surgical oncologists have extensive experience performing complex, life-saving cancer surgeries that are not frequently performed at most hospitals.

UChicago Medicine radiation oncologists were among the first in the nation to offer image-guided radiation therapy, and are using the newest technologies to target radiation to tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Working in tandem with other specialists, our radiation oncologists have developed strategies to target certain early metastatic cancers while they are easier to treat – reducing the chance for greater cancer spread and leading to successful outcomes.

Our specialists were among the first in the nation to offer emerging immunotherapy treatments that harness the power of the body’s own systems to recognize and attack cancer cells. These treatments are effective at treating advanced, recurrent and metastatic disease.

Nearly 30 years ago, we developed Illinois’ first program to provide comprehensive evaluation, prevention and risk reduction for people at high risk for primary or recurrent cancer. Today, our Comprehensive Cancer Risk and Prevention Clinic team continues this important work to assess and develop action plans for individuals who have an increased risk for cancer due to family history, medical and genetic factors and/or lifestyle influences.
