[VIDEO LOGO] My name is Nithin Pusapati, and I'm a rheumatologist. As a rheumatologist, I treat autoimmune and inflammatory conditions. So things like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout. And as part of the treatments and diagnoses I offer, I often counsel patients on anti-inflammatory medications and immune modulating therapy to treat their disease if it's necessary. One of the reasons I really wanted to become a physician before I started medical school was really the opportunity to get to know and build long-term relationships with patients. I always found that to be the most rewarding thing, from what I saw doctors do when I was growing up. And I also just always really enjoyed the science of medicine, and being able to incorporate that for each patient and meeting them where he or she is at in life. For me, one of the reasons why I was really excited to join the team here at UChicago was-- well, first and foremost, I love Chicago. I love its people. I'm really excited to be able to give back to the community in that way. But more than that, I felt like this institution does a really good job of incorporating both the highest tenets of evidence-based medicine, but also really serving patients and serving the city in a way that tries to make people's lives better. My philosophy of care is every patient's different. I think it's really easy as a physician sometimes to treat a patient like they're in a research study or they just have the disease. But I really believe that especially as a rheumatologist, it's so important to what is going on with the patient's body, what's going on with their mind, and trying to find a way to meet them halfway to make sure that they actually feel better at the end of the day. A lot of what I do as a rheumatologist is really look at someone's complicated medical history, their diseases, their medical past, how they're feeling at the moment, and try and figure out if there is anything autoimmune or inflammatory going on. And if there's not, if I can maybe help point them in the direction of someone that might be able to help them more. My role here at U of C is I not only get to practice a lot of clinical medicine, but I get to work a lot with our Rheumatology Fellowship program, with the internal medicine residency, and then the School of Medicine in general. And so one really important thing to me is being involved in medical education, being able to not only teach, but learn from trainees in the medicine and rheumatology program. So that's something that I'm very passionate about. And additionally, I really do enjoy being involved actively with the American College of Rheumatology. I feel like that allows me to remain up-to-date for my patients, and allows me to better have a sense of where the field is going. [VIDEO LOGO]

This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
