[MUSIC PLAYING] My name is Jason Sulkowski. I am a pediatric surgeon. A pediatric surgeon is a general surgeon who takes care of patients ranging from newborn infants all the way up to young adults. That gives me the opportunity to take care of a wide range of patients and a wide range of conditions. I became a doctor and a surgeon because I wanted to be able to directly work with people and directly help people. And this also gives me the opportunity to work with science and technology in my day to day. I came to the University of Chicago and Comer Children's Hospital for the opportunity to take care of a diverse and wide-ranging patient population and also to work with a group of colleagues that are utilizing the newest cutting-edge technology in order to take care of their patients. One of the most important things for me, when I'm taking care of a new patient and their family, by extension, is really making sure that everyone has all their questions answered and that I don't walk away from the bedside without making sure that everyone understands as much as possible, what's going on, what the condition might be, what the treatment is going to look like, and what to expect going forward. The reason I decided to go into pediatric surgery in particular is I just really enjoy the opportunity to work with kids and their families. Kids are always just so resilient and inspiring, and it's always really great to work with the families. Kids just so often have a built-in support network that's really great to work with. Through my career, I've had the opportunity and the privilege to work at a number of institutions at each stage of my education and training, starting through medical school and residency and so on. And working at new institutions teaches you new ways to do things, and it also teaches you adaptability. And so I think that that's been a huge attribute in my own personal career path. UChicago Medicine is committed to fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity in all matters related to compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare. This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
