[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Andrea Berkemeyer. I'm a pediatric gastroenterologist here at the University of Chicago. I also do outreach clinics at Hinsdale and Edward's Hospital. Ped GI focuses on a child's digestive system, starting at the mouth, the throat, or esophagus, working your way down to the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, or colon. And it involves any aches, pains, disease process that affects those areas. Sometimes that's nutrition, growth, abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease, just as examples. I chose to become a physician, of course, because I wanted to help people. And as I continued in my medical career and training, I grew to love the field of pediatrics, specifically because I wasn't only helping the pediatric patient, but I was also involving and educating and helping their families and their support systems as well. And I love that symbiotic relationship. I think children specifically are incredibly resilient. And so it's very rewarding to solve that diagnostic dilemma, that puzzle of what's hurting, what's causing pain, and really make a lasting difference. And to see that affect their schoolwork, affect their friends, social life-- all aspects of their life-- I find it to be very rewarding. I completed my fellowship here at the University of Chicago, and it was an easy decision to stay completely a no-brainer. I loved training here. I received impeccable teaching. I really enjoy my colleagues. We have amazing access to research here, which I think is really important. As you see, patients is not only are you providing the best care that you know of for your patient, but exposing them to other potential opportunities that can further cure or help their disease process. And I really, truly didn't consider looking elsewhere. Comer is such a fabulous place to train, such a fabulous place to work. I'm really excited to continue my career here. I think back to our Hippocratic oath that we take as medical students do no harm. I think that medicine can become very formulative and very prescription-focused, and those are very important parts when necessary. But I really, as a DO, especially, like to take a look at the child as a whole. And there are a lot of behavioral, societal, social, emotional interventions that I like to incorporate into my care, as well as the diagnostic workup and the prescription aspect. And so I really feel that combination of components is really important to not only treat the problem in front of you, but also to make a really lasting difference in the life of the patient. Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
