[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Rae Leanor Gumayan, and my subspecialty is in fetal and neonatal neurology. So what that means is that I see pregnant women during their prenatal care-- if there's a difference in the way the fetal brain has developed, and I also follow these babies once they are born. So when I was growing up, I witnessed my dad going through a neurodegenerative disorder, and it really impacted not only obviously him and the way he moved his body, the way he talks, and eats, but it also impacted the rest of the family. And so I saw how hard it was for my mom and for me and for my siblings as well throughout all those years. And so I want to also be a person that helps not only my patients but helps the whole family. And so from that experience as a child, I developed a deep compassion for how an illness can impact the whole family, in total. I think Comer provides a unique and warm environment because it has a history of providing family-centered approach to caring for these families and patients as they go through an illness. In caring for my patients, for I think it's an integral for parents to be part of the treatment and management. That means that I want them to fully understand and are comfortable with the treatment plan moving forward. I want them to know that they are not alone in this very, very difficult journey. I take the extra time to make sure that they understand what's going on, and that they have all the support that they need, and that includes connecting them with psychology, if that's something that they need to process throughout this difficult process, as well as other support that they may need. The past few years have really made me realize what an honor it is to be doing what I'm doing now, especially that families are going through a very devastating part of their life. It is an honor and a privilege for me to be part of this journey with them. [AUDIO LOGO]

This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
