[AUDIO LOGO] I'm Dr. Fatima Khan. I'm an allergist immunologist. As an allergist immunologist, we treat patients of all ages. We see patients with food allergies, medication allergies, environmental allergies, asthma, immune deficiencies, and some of the procedures that we do in our offices include food challenges, medication challenges, allergy testing, and testing of lung function, just to name a few. We also perform oral immunotherapy in some of our offices. My mother is a physician, and I grew up watching her dedication and compassion to her patients. And I was also exposed to her medical journals. And I remember seeing one journal where it had a cover art of the human anatomy, and I was really fascinated by it. And I decided to learn more about the organ systems and what they do. And I even wrote a paper about it for my class in science. Fast forward to undergraduate, I actually came here and I was an undergraduate here at the University of Chicago. I majored in biological sciences. And while I was here, I worked in two research labs, and I also volunteered at the hospital. And that really cemented my decision to become a physician. Joining University of Chicago, UChicago Medicine is like a homecoming for me. Everyone I've met here at UChicago Medicine, including the Division of Allergy Immunology, are such wonderful people. They're collegial. They're collaborative. And I really find joy in being surrounded by people who share the same passion and drives as I do. My approach to patient care is really more of a collaborative one. I like to learn what my patient's goals are with the conditions that they're seeing me for. And I really approach that by listening to what they're saying. But I also ask a lot of specific questions so that I can understand their story and their journey. And that really helps me to hopefully meet them where they're at and maybe move closer towards their goals. I think allergy immunology is unique in the fact that we deal with problems, some of which stem at the molecular level, and we have wonderful new medications that we can use to treat, especially in the field of food allergy. There's so much research. There's so much coming out. This is really an exciting era for us, where we can provide more advances in treatments, such as oral immunotherapy and other treatments, to help protect patients from anaphylaxis or severe reactions, if they were accidentally to be exposed to their food allergy. And that's really exciting to me. And food allergy is one of my special interests and the reason why I decided to pursue an allergy immunology fellowship. So I feel those are some exciting things that we do as allergist immunologists that may not necessarily be something that you see in other fields. [AUDIO LOGO]

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
