An acute subdural hematoma is a rapidly accumulating collection of blood between the brain and its outermost covering (the dura). It is typically caused by severe head trauma and is one of the most critical neurosurgical emergencies, requiring immediate evaluation and often emergency surgery to relieve pressure on the brain.

What Is Acute Subdural Hematoma?

An acute subdural hematoma (SDH) occurs when bridging veins or cortical arteries tear, usually following a high-impact head injury. The blood pools under the dura, compressing the underlying brain tissue. Because acute SDHs are often associated with underlying severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), they carry a higher risk of complications than epidural hematomas. We are prepared to manage any challenges that arise and are dedicated to providing the highest level of care during these critical moments.

At a Glance

  • Acute subdural hematoma is a fast-growing blood clot between the dura and the brain.
  • Most commonly caused by high-impact trauma such as falls, motor vehicle accidents, or assaults.
  • Diagnosed via non-contrast CT scan; typically appears as a crescent-shaped blood collection.
  • Large or symptomatic hematomas require emergency craniotomy or decompressive craniectomy.
  • Outcomes depend heavily on the severity of the initial injury and the speed of treatment.
