Gynecologic Care for Young Adults with Complex Medical Conditions
Young people with medical, genetic and developmental conditions often have difficulty finding gynecologic care that reflects their complex needs. At the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, our adolescent gynecologists routinely treat teens with other challenges that can complicate their care.
We offer surgical treatments for teens and young adults with common and rare anomalies:
- Hymenal anomalies like imperforate hymen
- Uterine anomalies, including rare conditions like accessory horns of the uterus
- Vaginal anomalies, including vaginal septum (divided vagina) and agenesis (failure to develop vagina)
- Labial differences, including enlargement and underdevelopment
Our team carefully considers the capabilities of each patient when designing and communicating appropriate gynecologic treatment plans for patients with:
- Cerebral palsy or other medical conditions resulting in physical disability
- Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome
- Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
- Developmental disabilities, such as developmental delays and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
We also collaborate with our developmental and behavioral pediatricians to design an effective management plan for your teen.
POI, formerly known as premature ovarian failure, can have many causes in teenagers, including:
- Autoimmune diseases
- Genetic disorders
- Cancer treatments
- Idiopathic
Whether a patient has a new diagnosis of POI or has had POI for many years, we can partner with our pediatric endocrinologists on hormone replacement therapy tailored for each patient’s age and condition.
Our team specializes in addressing gynecological issues for teens and young adults with all types of genetic disorders, including:
- Turner syndrome, which can delay puberty and menstruation
- Rare genetic syndromes, such as:
- Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a congenital overgrowth syndrome
- Prader-Willi syndrome, which can cause underdeveloped reproductive organs and delayed puberty
- Differences of physical development, such as androgen insensitivity syndrome (AISSwyer syndrome, also known as 46,XY complete gonadal dysgenesis)
Having certain disorders or undergoing treatment for many chronic diseases can put patients at risk for gynecological issues, so they require more specialized gynecological care. We routinely provide gynecologic care for children with:
- Bone marrow transplant for noncancerous conditions
- Cancer
- Congenital cardiac disease
- Hematologic issues, including sickle cell disease and bleeding disorders like von Willebrand disease
- HIV/AIDS
- Neurologic conditions, including epilepsy
- Neurological disease
- Rheumatologic issues, such as lupus
- Solid organ transplants
What You Can Expect on Your First Visit
When a preteen or teen meets with our team, we’ll take their medical and family history. For patients 12 or older, we include a one-to-one confidential conversation with one of our pediatric and adolescent gynecologists.
If a young patient’s history warrants it, we will also conduct a physical exam. Then, we will work on a personalized treatment plan that meets their needs.
