Comprehensive Gynecologic Care for Children with Complex Medical Conditions
Having medical, genetic and developmental conditions can make it more challenging to find gynecologic care that meets your child’s unique needs. At the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, this is what we do every day. Our pediatric and adolescent gynecologists offer a personalized approach that includes top-notch medical care as well as age-appropriate communication and support.
We offer surgical treatments for children with common and rare anomalies:
- Hymenal anomalies like imperforate hymen
- Uterine anomalies, including rare conditions like accessory horns of the uterus
- Vaginal anomalies, including vaginal septum (divided vagina) and agenesis (failure to develop vagina)
- Labial differences, including enlargement and underdevelopment
Our team carefully considers the capabilities of each patient when designing and communicating appropriate gynecologic treatment plans for patients with:
- Cerebral palsy or other medical conditions resulting in physical disability
- Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome
- Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
- Developmental disabilities, such as developmental delays and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Our team specializes in addressing gynecological issues for children with all types of genetic disorders, including:
- Turner syndrome, which can cause issues with puberty and menstruation
- Rare genetic syndromes, such as:
- Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a congenital overgrowth syndrome
- Prader-Willi syndrome, which can cause delayed or lack of puberty
- Differences of physical development, such as androgen insensitivity syndrome (AISSwyer syndrome, also known as 46,XY complete gonadal dysgenesis)
Having certain disorders or undergoing treatment for many chronic diseases can put patients at risk for gynecological issues, so they require more specialized gynecological care. We routinely provide gynecologic care for children with:

- Cancer
- Congenital cardiac disease
- Hematologic issues, including sickle cell disease and bleeding disorders like von Willebrand disease
