Treating Your Prostate Cancer

UChicago Medicine offers a full range of treatment options for prostate cancer. Your physician team will consider many factors for the most effective path, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Robotic prostatectomy surgery – a minimally invasive procedure to remove the prostate gland, which our urologists have performed more than any other team in Illinois. Robot-assisted prostate cancer surgery offers less pain, greater precision and shorter hospital stays.
  • Precise radiation therapy – a treatment designed to cure prostate cancer after initial diagnosis or surgery. Our team offers intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), brachytherapy (also known as seed implant radiation therapy) and radiotherapy clinical trials.
  • Systemic therapies – medical treatments for recurrent or metastatic prostate cancer that attack it throughout the body. This may include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy and others.
  • Theranostics – a combination of therapeutics and diagnostics for men with metastatic or recurrent prostate cancer. Cancer cells are detected anywhere in the body with a PSMA PET scan. Then, Lutetium-177 vipivotide tetraxetan PSMA therapy (Pluvicto) kills the cancer cells with fewer side effects than most alternative treatments.
  • Focal therapy – a precise treatment for early stage prostate cancer that destroys cancer cells without the need to remove the entire prostate. Specifically, our team offers a focal therapy known as high-intensity focused ultrasound, or HIFU.
  • High Risk & Advanced Prostate Cancer Clinic – the UChicago Medicine High-Risk and Advanced Prostate Cancer Clinic (UCHAP) provides specialized treatment for men with increased risk of prostate cancer and those with aggressive forms of the disease.

Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials

UChicago Medicine is a major center for national prostate cancer clinical trials, as well as those designed by our expert faculty. These trials test novel surgical, radiation and medical treatments to fight prostate cancer and improve the quality of life for patients. Your physician team can help you determine if a clinical trial is right for you.
