For the fourth year in a row, the University of Chicago Hospitals have been selected as one of the 15 best hospitals in the United States by U.S.News & World Report in their annual survey of America's 6,247 hospitals.

In the 2000 Best Hospitals issue (17 July 2000), the University of Chicago Hospitals ranked 14th nationally overall and were ranked among the best in 12 specialty areas.

The University of Chicago Hospitals programs that ranked in the top 10 include cancer (#6), gastroenterology (#7), and endocrinology (#8). Others in the top 20 include geriatrics (#12), neurology and neuroscience (#16), and pulmonology (#16). Six other programs--gynecology, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), orthopedics, kidney disease, pulmonology, and rheumatology--scored in the top 33.

The University of Chicago Hospitals are the only Illinois hospitals ever included in the survey's Honor Roll of the Best Hospitals in the United States.

The rankings are based on a mathematical formula that takes into account each institution's reputation according to a poll of 150 specialists in each field, the ratio between actual and expected mortality at the hospital, and a group of factors such as technology, procedure volume and nursing care.
