What is Interventional Cardiology?

Atman Shah and patient

UChicago Medicine has an internationally recognized interventional cardiology team that manages and treats a wide range of heart and vascular conditions with dedicated nonsurgical, catheter-based techniques and technologies. Interventional cardiology provides high-impact, safe outcomes for conditions ranging from complex coronary artery and peripheral arterial disease to valvular and structural heart disease, heart failure and pulmonary embolism.

In addition to treating common to complex conditions, interventional cardiology procedures can also be used to diagnose and/or monitor conditions. For patients at risk for heart or vascular disease, interventional techniques can identify if they are in the early stages of disease and can recommend further monitoring, diagnostics and therapies designed to prevent the condition from progressing.

Benefits of Interventional Cardiology Minimally Invasive Treatment

Cardiologists at UChicago Medicine are committed to delivering the best and safest treatment for our patients. If an interventional cardiology consult is recommended for you, these minimally invasive, catheter-based treatments offer several advantages compared to open-chest, traditional procedures, including:

  • Minimally invasive procedures for heart disease: Patients who are good candidates for selected interventional cardiology procedures can be treated for serious, and even deadly, conditions without open-heart surgery.
  • Shorter hospital stay: Time spent in the hospital may be reduced by as much as 50 percent compared to open surgical procedures, with many patients able to go home the same day.
  • Faster recovery: Rather than waiting several weeks to heal, patients can return to work or other activities much more quickly — usually within one to two weeks.
  • Less pain: Tylenol or other over the counter medications are often enough to manage pain after hospital discharge because of decreased damage to tissue and muscle.
  • No scar: Depending on the case, the procedure is done via a small hole in either the artery or the vein of the leg or arm. Open-heart procedures frequently require a larger incision down the center of the chest.
  • Option for high-risk patients: Interventional cardiology can offer an effective alternative to traditional surgery for patients with complex diseases or patients who require bloodless procedures.
  • Quality of life metrics post procedure: Patients have reported a better quality of life after interventional cardiology treatment.
