At UChicago Medicine, we provide affirming surgical procedures for LGBTQ+ patients, including:

Gender Affirmation Surgery

Our expert team of plastic surgeons, reconstructive urologists and gynecologic surgeons can provide a full range of both top and bottom surgeries for transgender and gender expansive patients. Services include:

  • Facial masculinization
  • Mastectomy (removal of breasts)
  • Chest and body contouringv
  • Hysterectomy (removal of uterus and ovaries)
  • Phalloplasty (removal of vagina and reconstruction of the urethra and penis)

Some of the methods used during these procedures were first developed by surgeons on our team, who still use the most advanced methods today.

Before having a gender-affirming surgery, you will meet with mental health professionals to confirm that you have gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria is the stress a person feels when their gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. Before having surgery, it is also important for patients to live in their identified gender role for 12 months.

Voice Feminization Surgery and Adam’s Apple Reduction Surgery

At the UChicago Medicine Voice Center, our laryngeal surgeon specializes in the medical and surgical management of the voice.

If you are transgender and want to change the tone of your voice, we can provide the following services:

  • Adam’s apple reduction surgery (chondrolaryngoplasty)
  • Voice feminization (Wendler glottoplasty)
  • Voice masculinization

Surgery to feminize your voice involves shortening your vocal cords with a laser so the voice makes a higher pitched sound.

Although surgical options are available, our team typically recommends a nonsurgical option — testosterone therapy — to lower the pitch of your voice first. Most transgender men are able to achieve their voice goals with hormone therapy alone.

Our laryngeal surgeon also offers a cosmetic procedure called a tracheal shave. This is also called a chondrolaryngoplasty and makes the Adam’s apple look smaller. Before and after surgery, our certified speech-language pathologists are here to support you.

Our Voice Center team includes health care providers who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. When you come to UChicago Medicine, they will help you understand what is involved with these options and decide if they are right for you. To make an appointment, call us at 1-888-824-0200.
