A unique approach that provides an ecosystem of trauma-informed care for children and their families who are critically injured or exposed to violence on the South Side of Chicago is getting a big boost, thanks to a $9.1 million gift by the Ellen & Ronald Block Family Foundation and the Hassenfeld Family Foundation.
Furthering its commitment to violence prevention and recovery on the South Side, the University of Chicago Medicine has joined with U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and nine other major area hospitals in the Chicago HEAL Initiative.
The Illinois Department of Public Health has approved the University of Chicago Medicine to be a Level 1 adult trauma center, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for the academic health system to launch the critical service on May 1.
