MRI technologist cheerfully stays hours after shift to ensure ill child in ICU gets needed care

One day recently, the MRI scanner in Comer Children’s Hospital was completely booked, serving many young patients, back-to-back.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. — the end of the MRI staff’s shift — a very ill patient from the pediatric intensive care unit needed to be scanned. In stepped MRI technologist Andrew Schultz, who has just finished his work in the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine MRI suite, to help out.

“He willingly, and with a cheerful attitude, stayed until 10 pm to scan the patient,” said Elizabeth Lyons, MSN, RN, a nurse on the pediatric sedation team. “Andy never complained and did whatever was needed to care for our patient.”

Lyons says it wasn’t the first time Schultz exhibited compassion with patients and patience with the sedation staff. “He is a model of excellence,” she said. “It’s such a pleasure to have Andy help us in Comer Children’s.”
