Food Service Workers Help Nurses Provide Better Care for Diabetic Patients at Meal Times
“It feels great to be part of an initiative that helps to improve patient health,” said Virgil Clark, one of four food services workers assigned to the I-Matter Mealtime Insulin Program.
He and his fellow teammates – Maria Cerna, Willie Parks and Lorenzo Brown – have been working with nurses to coordinate the delivery of patient meals with a blood sugar test, allowing nurses to determine if insulin needs to be administered before the patient eats.
Nursing leader Ursula Dolan, RN, BSN, OCN, credits the program’s success to the foursome. “They are a friendly, dependable team that helps us achieve our goal of reducing low blood sugar for diabetic patients.”
The food services workers understand the importance of their role. “Patient care comes first, and I am honored to be involved in the program,” said Parks, a 43-year employee.
