Volunteer starts music program for cancer patients

Lab technologist by day, David Fischer decided to volunteer at the medical center in the evenings to further prepare for a career in medicine.

“In less than a year, David spent more than 100 hours rounding on patients, keeping them occupied, bringing comfort items and, most importantly, giving them a listening ear,” said Melanie Francia, volunteer services program coordinator.

But Fischer felt he wanted to do more. With the help of two fellow volunteers, he pioneered a music program for cancer patients on CCD 10 East. Every Monday, he plays the piano on the unit and offers to teach music to patients as well as visitors.

One patient commented, “The music transported me to a time and place where I didn’t have to think of my illness. It was a beautiful respite that contributed to an overall sense of peace.”

Fischer considers his musical ability a “wonderful gift that is meant to be shared.” And, he says, he is happy to share it with our patients.
