OVS clinic ribbon cutting

To provide quality clinical eye care and to expand its efforts in the visual sciences, the University of Chicago Medicine opened the doors of its newly renovated ophthalmology clinic to patients today. Located on the first floor of the Duchossois Center for Advanced Medicine, the 6,000-square-foot facility creates a warm, inviting environment for patients and their families in an easily navigable space, specially designed to assist patients with visual impairments.

New features of the space include:

  • Different types of flooring to help remind patients where they are within the clinic.
  • Bathroom door frames painted bright red to clearly differentiate them from exam rooms.
  • Larger hallways to accommodate equipment used by physically challenged patients and family members.
  • A 20-foot long pediatric examination room equipped with “fixation animals” to get the attention of young patients.
  • An efficiently designed reception desk area to check-in up to four patients simultaneously, reducing wait times.

The new clinic is phase one of a planned two-phase renovation. When the second part is complete in early 2019, the existing clinic space will be nearly twice the size and have additional exam and support and team rooms.

Last week, faculty and staff attended a ribbon cutting ceremony in honor of the clinic’s completion. Remarks were given by Kenneth Polonsky, MD, dean and executive vice president of medical affairs for the University of Chicago.
