Outpatient spine surgery now available at Ingalls Same Day Surgery
There’s some great news for patients who need spinal surgery!
Ingalls Same Day Surgery in Tinley Park now offers two outpatient lumbar spine procedures: microdiscectomy and laminectomy. The first procedures were performed in December following the recent addition of renowned spine surgeons Anthony Rinella, M.D., and Kris Siemionow, M.D., to the Ingalls Same Day Surgery medical staff.
That means you can have spine surgery, recover and go home on the very same day – with all the conveniences that Ingalls SDS offers!
Discectomy is surgery to remove lumbar – or lower back – herniated disc material that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. It’s often done using a microscope to the view the disc and nerves, thus its name, microdiscectomy.
Lumbar laminectomy is one of the most common procedures performed in patients over the age of 50. It’s used to treat spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spaces in the spine or backbone, which causes pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. In most cases, the spinal narrowing compresses the nerve root, leading to pain along the back of the leg.
“Spine surgeries have been done on an outpatient basis for some time and have been approved by Medicare to be performed in an Ambulatory Surgery Center setting,” explains Tom Murphy, Administrator of Ingalls Same Day Surgery. “We’re pleased to welcome Drs. Rinella and Siemionow to our medical staff and broaden our scope of services to include certain types of spinal surgery.”
A pioneer in the field of ambulatory surgery, Ingalls Same Day Surgery was the first of its kind when it opened in 1985. And for more than 30 years, it has always focused on superior quality and the total patient experience.
In most cases, patients arrive 45 minutes before their procedure, and because there are fewer variables, surgeries run on time.
“Ingalls Same Day Surgery is very patient-focused,” Murphy added. “Because we specialize in outpatient surgery, our center is equipped with a patient’s comfort and convenience in mind.”
Amenities include 13 private pre- and post-surgery rooms for patients and family members; ample parking; an on-site pharmacy to fill prescriptions after surgery; and, most importantly, attentive staff.
In fact, Ingalls Same Day Surgery receives such high scores from patients that it was recently named a National APEX Quality Award winner by SPH Analytics for 2014-15 for outstanding patient satisfaction and overall quality of care.
The national distinction is given to healthcare organizations that have demonstrated the highest level of patient satisfaction and overall care in the 12-month evaluation period. Winners like Ingalls Samd Day Surgery are determined solely by feedback given by their patients.
This year, more than 900 healthcare facilities were eligible for the award, but only 104 were selected as winners. Ingalls SDS was one of them!
“We’re honored to be recognized for our efforts, especially with an award that’s determined by patient satisfaction,” he added.
Ingalls Same Day Surgery is also a popular choice for financial reasons because it typically involves lower costs than a hospital-based surgery, and savings are passed on to patients.
“We’re definitely a value option for patients: quality, patient experience and cost,” he said.
Future plans at include additional procedures such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) and hysterectomy, and cervical (neck) spine procedures.
