April 15, 2010

The University of Chicago's graduate programs in the biological sciences and the Pritzker School were both ranked 13th in the United States in U.S. News & World Report's annual "Best Graduate Schools" issue, on newsstands April 27, 2010.

The biological science ranking moved up five notches, from 18 in 2008, the last time the programs were ranked, to 13 for 2010.

The medical school has risen from 22nd in 2004 to 13th in 2010, the fastest rising program of any top-50 school. It gained a half step this year, moving from a tie for 13 in 2009 to alone at 13 in 2010.

Pritzker ranked fourth in the country on research funding per faculty member, with average annual NIH grant support per researcher of $295,700, behind only Stanford, Yale and the University of Washington. The medical school has also dramatically increased its ability to attract the best students. Since 2004, the medical school's student selectivity has improved from 41st in the United States to third, behind only Harvard and Washington University.

For primary-care education, Pritzker rose from 45th in 2009 to 30th in 2010.

No other Illinois program scored as well in medical education or biological sciences.
