The University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital presents a free pediatric injury presentation and panel discussion for parents

May 29, 2008

Childhood injuries increase dramatically during the summer months. It is important for parents and caregivers to understand which injuries should be handled at home, which can wait for a visit to your pediatrician, and which injuries require a trip to the emergency room.

A free presentation and panel discussion on pediatric injury prevention and treatment is being offered by the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.

When: Thursday, June 12 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Oak Brook Marriott, Salon B, 1401 W. 22nd St., Oak Brook, IL 60523

The evening will be co-hosted and moderated by Rob Davis, MD, chair of pediatrics at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital.

"It's important for parents to understand strategies that can help to prevent or mitigate injuries to their children," says Mindy Statter, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and surgery and director of pediatric trauma at Comer Children's Hospital. "Sometimes, basic activities may be more dangerous than they seem. We've seen at least 10 injuries caused by television 'tipovers' in the past year.  To my knowledge, no hospital has presented a program like this before, and it will be well worth the time to attend."

Parents will also have an opportunity to learn more about specialized treatment for various injuries that can't be handled by the primary care physician, including advances in orthopedic treatments, trauma treatment, and sedation for procedures. Additionally, a sports-medicine specialist will be available to discuss sports-related injuries for those parents who have children in summer sports programs.

The panel includes, from Adventist Hinsdale Hospital:
Rob Davis, DO, Chair of Pediatrics

From the University of Chicago Medical Center:
Holly Benjamin, MD, FACSM, pediatric sports medicine specialist
Robert Bielski, MD, orthopedic surgeon
Heather Fagan, MD, critical care specialist
Mindy Statter, MD, injury prevention and trauma care specialist
