Free program educates about bladder cancer

On October 13, 2007, the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) will host, "Understanding Bladder Cancer," a free educational program directed at patients, family members and caregivers. The forum will be held at the University of Chicago's Gordon Center for Integrative Science, 927 E. 57th Street, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Bladder cancer specialists from the University of Chicago, University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and Loyola University will gather to present a complete overview of the disease. Topics to be covered include bladder cancer basics, making good treatment decisions, understanding clinical trials, surgical management of invasive bladder cancer and living with a urostomy.
There will also be opportunities for survivors and their caregivers to ask questions.
As the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, with a recurrence rate between 50 and 80 percent, bladder cancer is a significant health concern.
"It is time for bladder cancer patients to unite and strengthen their community," says Diane Zipursky Quale, co-founder and president of BCAN. "With the gap of information available on bladder cancer, it is more important than ever to give patients a voice within the medical community. This event will provide a comfortable environment for patients and physicians to discuss important issues associated with the disease."
Lunch will be provided.
