Diahann Carroll to speak at University of Chicago Hospitals cancer survivors celebration

Actress, singer, and breast cancer survivor Diahann Carroll will be the keynote speaker for University of Chicago Hospitals' 15th annual Cancer Survivors Day celebration on Sunday, June 6.

The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the Westin Hotel, 909 N. Michigan Ave. Anyone who has had cancer, plus friends or family members, is welcome to attend. Last year, nearly 1,000 people enjoyed the celebration.

Carroll's career spans more than 40 years and includes a Tony Award, a Golden Globe, and nominations for an Emmy and an Oscar. In 1968, she became the first African-American actress to star in her own weekly comedy TV series, Julia. She later played the glamorous but scheming Dominique Devereaux on Dynasty. She launched her own line of fashions in 1977 and has since been included twice on the "International Best Dressed List."

In 1998, Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through surgery and radiation therapy. Since then she has worked to increase cancer awareness and to help women of limited means get breast cancer screenings. Carroll currently serves as a spokeswoman for the National Women's Cancer Research Alliance.

Cancer Survivors Day provides an opportunity for those with cancer to meet other patients and long-term survivors.

"Events such as this one can take away some of the stress that comes with a diagnosis of cancer," said Peggy Williams, director of psycho-oncology programs at the University of Chicago Hospitals. "This gathering is a chance for cancer survivors to see old friends, chat with their caregivers in a non-clinical setting and celebrate their success. It also allows newly diagnosed patients to meet with hundreds of long-term survivors, walking evidence that there is good reason for hope despite a cancer diagnosis."
