National survey again names UCH as one of the best U.S. hospitals
Only Illinois hospital to make the list
July 17, 2003
For the seventh year in a row, the University of Chicago Hospitals has been selected as one of the best hospitals in the United States by U.S.News & World Report in its annual survey of America's 6,003 hospitals.
In the 2003 Best Hospitals issue (28 July 2003), the University of Chicago Hospitals ranked 14th nationally overall and were ranked among the best in 12 specialty areas.
The University of Chicago Hospitals programs in cancer (#6) and gastroenterology (#6) were ranked in the top ten nationwide.
Seven other programs were ranked in the top 20, including geriatrics (#12), hormonal disorders (#15), neurology & neurosurgery (#15), rheumatology (#17), respiratory disorders (#19), kidney disease (#19) and gynecology (#19). Three other programs -- orthopedics (#23), cardiology & cardiac surgery (#30) and ear-nose-and-throat (#31) -- scored in the top 40.
The University of Chicago is the only Illinois hospital ever included in the survey's Honor Roll of the Best Hospitals in the United States.
The U.S.News & World Report rankings are based on a mathematical formula that takes into account each institution's reputation according to a poll of 150 specialists in each field, the ratio between actual and expected mortality at the hospital, and a group of factors such as available technology, procedure volume and nursing care.
