National Survey Again Names UCH as One of Best in U.S.

National survey again names University of Chicago Hospitals as one of best in U.S.

Only Illinois hospital to make the list

July 22, 2002

For the sixth year in a row, the University of Chicago Hospitals has been selected as one of the 17 best hospitals in the United States by U.S.News & World Report in its annual survey of America's 6,045 hospitals.

In the 2002 Best Hospitals issue (22 July 2002), the University of Chicago Hospitals ranked 14th nationally overall and were ranked among the best in 11 specialty areas.

The University of Chicago Hospitals programs that ranked in the top ten include cancer (#6), gastroenterology (#6) and orthopedics (#10).

Others in the top 20 include geriatrics (#11), hormonal disorders (#14), respiratory disorders (#17), gynecology (#19), and kidney disease (#20). Four other programs -- rheumatology (#22), ear-nose-and-throat (#35), urology (#38) and neurology and neurosurgery (#39) -- scored in the top 50.

The University of Chicago is the only Illinois hospital ever included in the survey's Honor Roll of the Best Hospitals in the United States. They have also won the Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corporation (NRC) for the last three years, which recognizes hospitals whose patients say they have the best doctors, best nurses, best overall quality and best image and reputation.

The U.S.News and World Report rankings are based on a mathematical formula that takes into account each institution's reputation according to a poll of 150 specialists in each field, the ratio between actual and expected mortality at the hospital, and a group of factors such as available technology, procedure volume and nursing care.
