Raymond P. Roos, MD

Marjorie and Robert E. Straus Professor of Neurology
Professor of Grossman Institute for Neuroscience Director, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Disease Clinic

I'm Raymond Roos, the Marjorie and Robert E. Professor of Neurological Science in the Department of Neurology. My philosophy of care-- probably, I was influenced by my uncle, who was a GP on Long Island years ago and took care of patients in many aspects, even delivered over 1,000 babies. And so, the idea of being important in the patient in every way is something that I try to carry out. I'm sure not as good as my uncle, but it provides a goal for me, as far as patient care.

In medical school, I found that neuroanatomy, the positioning of different areas of the brain, and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves, were something that piqued my interest. And so, I decided to pursue neurology, working in the laboratory and perhaps identifying something that no one had ever thought about or identified before.

Now, this particular identification may not change the world. Nevertheless, it also warms my heart to be responsible for some new knowledge.

Raymond P. Roos, MD, is a board-certified neurologist who is an established expert on neurodegenerative diseases (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and prion diseases (e.g., Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease), multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory central nervous system diseases, and neuropathy. He directs the ALS/Motor Neuron Disease clinic.

A basic goal of Dr. Roos' research studies is to use molecular techniques to better understand the pathogenesis of MS and ALS. For instance, in one investigation, he and his colleagues sought to identify genes and gene products critical to the death and survival of motor neurons — especially as related to neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS. The lab uses viruses and transgenic mouse models in order to clarify the mechanisms by which mutant genes kill the target neurons.

About Our Star Ratings and Comments:

Randomly selected patients are sent patient satisfaction surveys after their visits. We get thousands of survey responses each year. The responses are used to improve patient experience and recognize staff members for the care they provide. Patient survey responses are also used to make star ratings for each provider.

For the star ratings and comments, all feedback on the provider web page is posted as it was given from patients. Comments that do not apply, risk patient privacy, or are not appropriate are not posted. Star ratings and comments come from a number of survey questions. A star rating is not given if a provider only has a small number of survey responses.
