Meet Dr. DuVall
So I focus, really, on taking care of young people with cancer. I'm specifically, directly focused on taking care of young people with blood cancers called leukemia, or lymphomas. But I also focus on taking care of young people with any type of cancer and making sure that they receive the care that they need that's specific to this population. So, focused on the difficulties that adolescents and young adults face with cancer and going through cancer therapy.
This idea that I really want to focus on a large group of people that are under-represented or under-served in the cancer community, which are young people adolescents and young adults with cancer. My focus of care is trying to be as holistic as possible, so trying to not just ignore all of the things that are going on outside of their medical care. Focused on what is impacting their relationships with others, whether it be their family or significant others, their ability to work or pursue educational goals, and how the cancer or the therapy could be impacting their future, dreams, and what they want to do with their life when hopefully all of this cancer is gone and the therapy is done.
The most rewarding part of my job is interacting with people, taking care of patients, getting to know them, their family, their lives, and being allowed this intimate role in a person's life that you otherwise wouldn't be allowed to have.
Both of my parents were the first people in their family -- in our family -- to go to college. And they both became teachers and have always, kind of, instilled in me the two things. It's to do well, and to do good. And so that's really what, kind of, inspired me to become a doctor. Because you can do well, and learn a lot and have that academic and scientific interest to improve the lives of people, but doing good is really what I think drives me more. It's being able to make a small impact in every patient's life that you see, that you get to know, and trying to make a positive change in every individual that you come in contact with.
Adam DuVall, MD, MPH, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for adolescents and young adults. Dr. DuVall’s training in both adult and pediatric hematology/oncology makes him uniquely qualified to care for patients spanning pediatrics through to adulthood. He primarily focuses on acute leukemias, lymphoma and complex cancer predisposition syndromes, such as familial platelet disorder, hereditary anemias and bone marrow failure syndromes, Li-Fraumeni syndrome and more. As part of the Adolescent Young Adult Cancer Program, he provides comprehensive cancer care for teenage and young adult patients with cancer.
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. DuVall explores translational and clinical research, finding ways to adapt new treatments/therapies into bedside care for young teens with cancer. His innovative clinical trials bring novel therapies to the forefront of leukemia treatment and his collaboration with basic scientists allows him to examine novel therapeutic options for genetic syndromes. Dr. DuVall also recognizes the impact of cancer therapy on all aspects of his patients’ lives, so he participates in research aimed at decreasing the impact of therapy on the psychosocial development of his patients.
