Gynecologic Care for Young People with Cancer

Cancer treatments and reproductive health
Cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and stem cell transplants can damage ovaries and affect hormone levels, which can have immediate or delayed effects on reproductive health. Our pediatric and adolescent gynecologists at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital will work with your cancer team to provide personalized gynecological care and support. Some of the services we offer include:
Fertility Preservation
While cancer treatments can affect fertility, many patients can have successful pregnancies when they are ready. To support you or your child before, during and after cancer treatment, we offer:
- Counseling, so you understand the fertility preservation options available
- Ovarian transposition surgery, which moves ovaries higher in the pelvis to protect them from radiation
- Egg freezing (cryopreservation)
- Ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC)
- Referrals to fertility specialists
Managing Other Gynecological Side Effects of Treatment
Side effects can include delayed puberty, irregular menstrual periods or heavy menstrual periods with anemia. Another complication is premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), which can lead to early menopause. If you or your child has POI, we’ll work with your team on a care plan that includes age-appropriate hormone therapy. We also provide options for side effects like vaginal dryness that can cause discomfort or contribute to sexual dysfunction after cancer treatment.
Contraceptive Guidance and Counseling on Potential Pregnancy-Related Complications
If you are sexually active, it is important not to become pregnant during your cancer treatment. We provide one-to-one counseling to help you make informed contraceptive choices based on your preferences. We’ll also help you understand any risks you may have with future pregnancies.
Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings
Survivors of childhood cancers may be at risk for future cancers. We’ll provide comprehensive cancer screenings based on your recommended schedule.
