Advancing Research in Pediatric Endocrinology

The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital has received more grant funding from the National Institutes of Health to study hormonal disorders in children and teens than any other program in the Midwest. Our Diabetes Research and Training Center is one of only six centers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the country.

In addition, the Chicago Center for Reproductive Research at the University of Chicago is one of only eight programs in the country to receive NIH funding. Research at the center helps benefit teens with menstrual irregularities and other related hormonal problems.

Such research funding helps doctors unravel some of the mysteries of hormonal diseases in children. Our patients benefit from this new knowledge — when and where it happens.

Currently, physicians at Comer Children’s are studying:

  • The cause of hormonal deficiencies and disorders at the molecular level, which may help doctors develop new ways to treat and prevent the diseases.
  • Differences in teenagers with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes — particularly the factors that affect future risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Causes of childhood diabetes in Chicago by tracking the incidence of diabetes through the Chicago Childhood Diabetes Registry.

Comprehensive Pediatric Diabetes Care

For over 20 years, Comer Children’s has forged expansive partnerships with the Chicago Children's Diabetes Center and Kovler Diabetes Center to help young people with all types of diabetes, including rare and difficult to treat forms of the chronic condition. Our pediatric diabetes experts work to provide holistic, family-centered care for hundreds of children who battle the disease each year. Our team of specialists can devise plans to manage diabetes, which may include dietary changes, exercise, medicine and weight loss.

Weight Management

If your child suffers from severe weight problems, our "Fit Matters" program can help. This team-based program teaches children how to change their behaviors so they can lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Other weight-loss programs are available and in partnership with your child’s pediatrician, we can monitor your child's progress. This approach, to help him or her manage their weight over the long term, can be customized to meet your child's needs.
