The University of Chicago Medicine is now one of nearly 40 health care institutions to support the integration of MyChart-available medical information in the Apple Health app on iPhone.

The Health Records feature within the app will make it easier for patients to conveniently access and manage their personal health information in seven important categories: allergies, health conditions, immunizations, lab results, medications, procedures and vitals.

Users can view their medical records simply by updating their iOS software on their iPhone. Health Records data are encrypted and protected with a user’s passcode.

“As UChicago Medicine continues to define and implement its digital health strategy, Health Records on iPhone will support our vision to increase access to patients and enhance our clinical integration as a health system,” said Heather Nelson, vice president and chief information officer. “Mobile solutions are foundational to any digital health transformation, and we want to be as quick to market as possible to increase both patient and provider engagement and satisfaction.”

Apple expects to add additional medical facilities are expected to be added in the future.

To set up the feature, patients need to:

  • Update iOS software on iPhone
  • Go to the Health Records section of the Health app
  • Search for UChicago Medicine
  • Log in with the MyChart user name and password they normally use to access their account
  • Request a UChicago Medicine MyChart account if you do not already have an account

Once patients log in, their health records will start to appear in the Health app, and they will be notified when new records are ready to view.

Having this information readily available to patients allows them to review their medical histories at times that are most convenient to them, and will help drive more informed conversations with health care providers and their own families.

“As UChicago Medicine grows as a health system, these key records can follow our patients and be available instantaneously," said Stephen Weber, MD, chief medical officer. "This mobile information will enable our them to become better stewards of their own records and be empowered to play a more active role in their health and wellbeing.”
