Guest Services Ambassador Treats Patients Like Family

Danny Ramirez

eTransporter-turned-guest services ambassador (GSA) Danny Ramirez knows patient care — and his way around the UChicago campus.

When an elderly man expressed fears about cancer treatment, Ramirez reassured him, sharing that his wife received excellent care at UChicago Medicine and is in remission. Their chat turned to Chicago landmarks and history buff Ramirez described local highlights: a burr oak tree on the Midway that predates the 1893 Columbian Exposition; a sealed tunnel between Mitchell Hospital and the baseball field; and the squash court under the old Stagg Field where physicists split the atom in 1942.

During their next visit, the intrigued retiree and his family sought out Ramirez, who received permission to lead them on a 20-minute tour. “We are glad to have found a friend,” a member of the tour party wrote. Says Ramirez, who joined UChicago Medicine in 2005: “When you are with me, you are my family.”
