Price Estimates

The University of Chicago Medicine is committed to providing you with the information you need to make the best decisions for your health and well-being, whether you obtain your care from a community hospital or an academic health system. To help you understand your potential out-of-pocket costs for healthcare received at UChicago Medicine, you can request a personalized price estimate or create a self-service estimate using our online tools:

For certain services, you may automatically receive a cost estimate, either by phone from a UChicago Medicine representative or through MyChart. For more information about how to understand your estimate, read our step by step instructions for how to use the price estimate tool. You may also find additional information about understanding healthcare prices in English and Spanish.

Standard Charges

Additionally, the University of Chicago Medicine is posting a list of our standard charges and payer-specific negotiated charges to support pricing transparency, in accordance with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services regulatory requirements. The presentation of this data is specifically for machine readability and is not meant for patient use.  We believe for our patients the most accurate and user-friendly information regarding your out-of-pocket costs is to follow the links above to get a personalized price estimate, contact a UChicago Medicine financial counselor, or contact your health insurance plan.

The starting list of standard charges is the same for every patient. However, what is ultimately charged — and what you ultimately pay — may vary by patient even though a similar procedure was performed. This is due to your medical condition, length of time in surgery or recovery, complications requiring unanticipated procedures, kinds of medications needed, and whether the service is provided in an inpatient or outpatient setting, among other reasons. Health insurance companies also negotiate different rates that are often less than the standard list of charges.

Patients with health coverage will pay only the deductible, coinsurance or copay required by their health plan at the in-network or out-of-network levels, as applicable, as long as all the authorization requirements are met per the plan. Request an individualized price estimate or contact your health insurance company to gain a complete understanding of how much each service will cost, taking into account deductibles, co-pays and other related fees.

Patients without health coverage are protected by the state’s Hospital Uninsured Patient Discount Act. Under the legislation, eligible patients may qualify for free or discounted care. Financial counselors are available to help patients with applying for assistance. In addition to charity care, UChicago Medicine offers the following:

  • No-interest payment plans
  • Self-pay discounts
  • Help applying for alternate insurance programs such as Medicaid
