Laboratory Services MedLabs
As an integrated part of the University of Chicago Medicine since 1980, our UC MedLabs has the ability to offer extensive consultation services through our clinical practices, which include more than 800 physicians and scientists. Operating within UChicago Medicine's Department of Pathology, we provide reference laboratory testing to various related and unrelated health care entities, managed care organizations and non-affiliated hospitals, outpatient clinics and private physicians' offices. We offer a full range of diagnostic services in both clinical and anatomical pathology and have various areas of expertise, such as flow cytometry and molecular diagnostics. UC MedLabs maintain a knowledgeable and highly professional staff available to meet the needs of our clients.

Laboratory Services
The Laboratory Service Center at UC MedLabs offers comprehensive technical support and customer service for our clients. This area is staffed with trained medical technologists, medical technicians and clerical personnel. The representatives are responsible for specimen reception, test ordering, pre-analytical specimen processing, quality assurance and exceptions handling. They also are available to answer clients inquires and provide assistance in areas such as:
- Specimen collection and transport
- Specimen requirements
- Test availability
- Test results
- Turnaround time

Laboratory Referral (Send Out) Service
Tests that are not performed by UC MedLabs are processed and sent out to our primary reference laboratory partner, Mayo Medical Laboratories. The test listing section of the handbook will indicate if the test is performed by UC MedLabs or referred to Mayo Medical Laboratories. Representatives for these services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. To reach them, please call 773-702-1316.
Courier Service
UC MedLabs provides courier service for transport of specimens (clinical and anatomical pathology) to our main testing facilities at UChicago Medicine. Clients can arrange for scheduled pickups or can call the courier as needed. A lock box will be supplied if specimens will be picked up after office hours. Each courier is equipped with special storage containers to ensure the integrity of specimens during transport to the laboratory.
New clients can arrange for courier service with their UC MedLabs' outreach service specialists. We will review courier schedules periodically to ensure the best service. STAT or "as needed" pickups can be obtained by calling the courier directly at 847-517-1903.
Supplies
A limited amount of supplies for specimen collection are provided for UC MedLabs' clients based on utilization of services. Orders are placed and supplies are shipped from our distribution centers to client sites. Please use UC MedLabs supply requisition when ordering. Call 773-834-4070.
