We offer comprehensive testing to accurately determine the underlying problem, as well as the latest medical and surgical treatments.

A quick and accurate diagnosis is essential when treating chronic nasal and sinus disorders. UChicago Medicine is home to a nasal and sinus program that offers second opinions and consultations from world-renowned physicians for chronic sinusitis disorders.

  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Recurrent infection
  • Loss of smell
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Nasal polyps

Our multidisciplinary staff includes experts in otolaryngology, allergy, radiology, neurology and pulmonology.

During your office visit, our physicians will review your medical records and diagnostic tests. UChicago Medicine care providers perform complete diagnostic evaluations to determine the cause and extent of various problems that affect the ears, nose and throat. In addition to common screenings, our ENT experts provide many diagnostic tests that are only available at leading programs. These include:

  • Speech, voice, throat and upper airway tests
  • Hearing, balance and ear-related tests
  • Sinus and nasal-related tests
Our ENT specialists have conducted important research on the effectiveness of various methods for treating allergies and sinus issues. As a result, our patients have access to the newest medications and procedures.

When surgery is needed, our physicians can perform advanced endoscopic procedures, which eliminate the need for external incisions and offer greater precision.

Our otolaryngologists team up with radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and other cancer specialists at UChicago Medicine's nationally-ranked cancer program. Speech-language pathologists, nurse practitioners and pathologists also are members of the multidisciplinary team for head and neck cancers. Treatment approaches for cancer include:

  • Concomitant chemoradiotherapy, which involves shrinking tumors with simultaneous chemotherapy and radiation therapy before surgery
  • Surgical techniques that preserve nerve function, including transoral robotic surgery (TORS), an innovative procedure to remove certain head and neck cancers through the mouth, rather than through large incisions via the throat or jaw
  • Advanced surgical techniques, including laser microsurgery, to reconstruct bone, soft tissue and nerves to preserve appearance and function when radical surgery is necessary to treat advanced cancer
We offer advanced therapies for sleep-related disorders, including excessive snoring and sleep apnea. Our ENT experts work with specialists in our comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center to determine the best solution for each patient’s sleep-related problem.

Treatments include outpatient surgical procedures to reduce snoring, such as laser-assisted uvula palatoplasty (LAUP) and somnuplasty.
The Center for Speech and Swallowing Disorders provides evaluation and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Speech and swallowing disorders can result from cancer, stroke, surgery, congenital deformity and other causes. Treatment may include surgical or medical approaches, as determined by our physicians and speech-language pathologist in consultation with the patient and family.
